Cyrus Todiwala commissions Brandt Design for his new Academy
/Luxury kitchen and interior design studio, Brandt Design, has collaborated with premium appliance brand Gaggenau and THEWALL, supplied by Kitchen Alchemy, to create a new cooking academy above chef Cyrus Todiwala’s Cafe Spice Namastérestaurant: scheduled to open June 2021.
Scott Davis, Director, Brandt Design says, “We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to work alongside renowned celebrity chef, Cyrus Todiwala, by designing and installing a unique purpose-built culinary space for anyone that wants to learn how to cook contemporary Indian cuisine from a true professional.”
Brandt Design, were approached by Chef Todiwala’s project team last year and commissioned for this particular project in the interest of creating a dynamic, hardworking kitchen space that is built for learning. The 385-square foot cooking academy features a custom arrangement of contemporary Hacker Classic matt lacquer finish furniture in Comet Putty Concrete Pearl Grey and Laser Brilliant Soft White from the Urban Collection by Brandt Design, along with premium range of appliances by Gaggenau and THEWALL: an innovative furniture system supplied by Kitchen Alchemy, which behaves like an appliance by introducing light, power and storage to bare walls.
Mr Todiwala’s Cooking Academy from Chef Cyrus Rustom Todiwala OBE, is a new incarnation of Café Spice Namaste at Royal Albert Wharf, which offers stunning waterside views. The Academy is on the first floor above the main restaurant and has been designed for amateur and professional chefs who seek tutelage from some of the best talents in the industry, including Michelin-starred chef-restaurateurs and executive chefs.
Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design explains, “We were delighted to develop an eye-catching industrial-style professional kitchen for one of the UK’s most loved chefs and champions of new talent. By specifying an anti-fingerprint lacquer and easy-clean bespoke quartz surfaces from the Brandt Collection, we have ensured a robust and resilient hygienic working and teaching environment. Our project designer, Georgie Robbins worked closely with Cyrus to maximise the reverse L-shaped scheme with careful zoning to create a designated storage area complete with tall units; four separate mobile work stations for students and a teaching space around an island unit in front of THEWALL, a unique new design concept which brings freedom and flexibility to the Academy’s kitchens. Conceived in Switzerland and now manufactured in Germany, THEWALL allows end-users to move, slide, flip, remove and replace lights and all accessories as many times as they wish; turning down-lights into up-lights, or moving light-shelves very, very easily. The ‘science’ within THEWALL is the patented powered rail. Although barely visible in the final product, years of meticulous R&D has honed and refined the rail so that it can hold a significant weight, up to 20kg, as well as powering multiple accessories – ideal in a busy working space which needs to be highly adaptable to meet the needs of professional chefs and students.”
The premium range of appliances by Gaggenau includes an impressive suite of cooking equipment with a large oven, two warming drawers, a slimline hob, induction hob, combi steam oven, combi microwave, complete with four Mini hobs on moveable islands. The brand’s grounding in professional kitchens and exemplary product quality alongside its industrial design made it the natural fit for the Academy with two wine coolers and a tall fridge and freezer on hand to assist the chef and his team.
From initial enquiry through to concept design and final install, Brandt Design invest time nurturing its understanding of each project, offering thoughtful consultation and expert guidance to create market leading design with purpose and precision.
