Everton's new stadium plans are approved by Liverpool council
/Liverpool City Council’s Planning Committee have unanimously approved Everton FC’s new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.
Peel L&P’s Director of Development for Liverpool Waters, Darran Lawless, commented: “We welcome Liverpool City Council’s decision to approve Everton Football Club’s planning application for their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, here at our Liverpool Waters site.
“Everton’s new stadium is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the whole city and a major catalyst for not only the Liverpool Waters development but the regeneration of the northern part of the city and Goodison Park.
“The design improvements that Everton have made as part of the revised planning application include exciting new public realm features such as a new stepped terrace, and opening up the historic waterfront which at present is inaccessible by members of the public.
“These plans complement our own efforts to make the entirety of Liverpool’s waterfront a place for thriving businesses and communities by creating thousands of new jobs, new homes and a destination for world class leisure and tourism.
The project is set to be completed and ready for games by 2024 with the seating capacity increasing to 52,000 which falls just short of their mersey side rivals Liverpool’s stadium which seats just over 53,000 fans. The £500m project is set to give the community a massive boost as it is claimed to be creating over 15,000 jobs. Despite initial resistance from local heritage activists and Historic England - the project has now been given the stamp of approval to proceed.

The limitations of Goodison Park which has stood since 1892 has caused a real struggle for Everton to find an option to move or upsize their stadium. The 25 year wait has now come to an end however and the project is set to revitalise the area. Concerns were raised to ensure that there is not any destruction of the area’s heritage. A new sustainable stadium will also have the ability to host events such as concerts and other hospitality events. There is still risk of damaging heritage along the waterside but the potential gains have outweighed the risks on this occasion. A long way to go yet but certainly positive news for Everton Football Club fans.
